The MTSU Name Change

I just thought I’d throw my two cents in on this issue. I say it should stay the same. First of all, the University of Middle Tennessee sounds just as unsophisticated as Middle Tennessee State University to me. Secondly, it serves no purpose other than blowing millions of dollars. If the name is changed we will have to get new signs on campus, new stationary, new stencils on the campus trucks, new uniforms for employees… basically new everything. All of this costs a tremendous amount of cash. Instead of changing the name they could just pay my tuition to the year 3000. Thirdly, changing the name confuses everyone. Just ask anyone about the University of Memphis. University of who?? That’s right, the University of Memphis, a.k.a. Memphis State University. All the people who have ever heard of MSU have no idea that the U of M is the same thing. Fourthly, just because you have the word State in your university’s name doesn’t mean you’re university is unsophisticated. What about Penn State or Arizona State? These are both highly regarded universities. Finally, I think the whole thing is just stupid. Students really don’t care how the name of their university sounds. If they did care, nobody but perverts would be going to Ball State. When a student picks a university, they usually consider such things as location, price, the quality of the program they are interested in, the quality of instructors, etc. The last thing on their mind would how the name sounds. If MTSU wants to better their reputation, they should be concentrating on providing a quality education, not the sound of their name.
